In today's job market, candidates are more willing to relocate for that perfect opportunity. Here are a few tips and things to be aware of when you are considering moving out of state for that job of your dreams:

  • Do your research - you always want to be sure and conduct some research on the area that you are considering, or the area where the job you're applying for is located; You can conduct online research on the differences in the cost of living and research the community.
  • Explore the area - if you travel to the area for an interview, plan ahead. Map out a plan to explore the community, the night life, and even the school system (if you have children).
  • Ask questions - find out from the company what they are willing to offer: Do they have a relocation program? If so, is the level of job that you're applying for eligible?
  • Weigh the pros and cons - take time out to weigh the pros of relocating vs. the cons. Always consider whether or not you are taking a loss, and if so, how much of a loss - and is that loss affordable?
  • Negotiate - make sure that you are receiving fair compensation based on your skills, experience, and what the company is offering in their relocation package/program, if any. If you feel that the offer is not fair, don't be afraid to ask for waht you feel is fair. In most cases, the worst thing that can happen is that they may say no and you will have to decide if you will still accept the offer. Many times we short ourselves by being afraid to ask for what we want. Consider that the company can and will grant you what you feel is fair, but they will never know what you want until you ask.

Lastly, if all of this research and negotiation sounds like alot of work, hire a company like Collective Concepts LLC to conduct the research on the area for you on the area, and even on the going salary for the job. Our company can also provide you with some viable tips to use in the negotiation process.
